eFeminists and eActivism
I remember seeing an underground book in the '70s illustrating a simple method for self-help abortions. It pictured a mason jar, with two hoses, used for uterine extraction. As terrifying as it sounds, it may be the future for women in many states in the US. It certainly is better than a coke douche or beatings with a baseball bat.
Although things are supposed to be easier today with Plan B ~ a pharmaceutical emergency treatment which can be taken within 72 hours of a contraceptive failure or unprotected sex ~ there are major problems with availabilty, distribution and cost. Recently I visited several college classrooms where the students reported how difficult it is to obtain Plan B. They had formed teams and visited drugstores asking for the pills. Pharmacists told them everything from not knowing what it is, not being obliged to carry it, demanding a prescription for it and saying that the person who dispenses Plan B is on vacation for two weeks.
Here is a brilliant demonstration of what eFEMINISTS are doing, what the internet can do for immediate results, what is going on that blasts through the road blocks of the '70s. Emergency Kindness is a non-profit organization whose networking website matches people who need Plan B and people who can discreetly provide it.
A woman who cannot find it, cannot buy it, cannot afford it ~ can apply through this website. An eActivist can offer services to provide it in confidence.
Emergency Kindness is run by a team of "Janes" spread throughout the country. EC is hard to get in America due to the widespread practice of doctors and pharmacists refusing to give the pill because it conflicts with their personal beliefs. If you are having trouble procuring EC, we will do everything in our power to get it to you before your 72 hours are up.
I am so proud of these new eActivists. This is brilliant and intelligent. It demonstrates what the internet can do. Thanks to everyone at Emergency Kindness.
