There is only one woman in a burka that I was happy to see, and that is Rep. Carolyn Maloney, as she addressed Congress demonstrating how women dress in some Middle Eastern cultures. Her book, Rumors of our Progress Have Been Greatly Exaggerated, is rich, daring, confounding, inspiring. I hope you read it.
I called her office today to get confirmation that she is going to introduce the WEA on July 21. "Do you mean the ERA?" asked the man who answered the phone. No, I explained, adding that I do know the difference. He got another person, a staffer, who asked me, "Do you mean the ERA?" No, I really mean the WEA, the Women's Equality Amendment. "Hold Please."
"Yes, the information you have is correct." I have no shame and tell you I cried. Hells, Bells, I still really care. I told him how happy I am and how proud I am of Rep. Maloney. "I am so grateful and excited." He said, "We are really excited about it here too."
And could it be more than an omen that it will be the first day for NOW's President-elect, Terry O'Neil? She will be speaking at the event and making it clear that NOW is firmly dedicated to Constitutional equality for all. I congratulate her on this momentous opening action. I so wish I could be there, however, if you are psychic - you will know I am there. Scotty Beam me UP!
